Kinja'd!!!

Got the buckles installed and looking good.

However, more importantly, I did the dreaded magnet test. I expected the worst, with quite a bit of bondo, since both the Chevelle and Camaro had the paint done by the same guy, and the Chevelle does have some in the rear quarters. .

AND GOT NONE. The magnet stuck every where! She’s got some bubbling, but no rot that I can see (because God knows what’s lurking under the vinyl top) and isn’t full of mud. Not even behind the rear tires!

Biggest relief in quite a while. Now, if only Spring could come and the car could go into the shop! I’m ready to cruise!

Nice to know it’s all metal.

Even a little bit on the Chevelle really isn’t shocking - it’s a 53 year old car now.

Enjoy!

Yeah, the Chevelle didn’t surprise me, though it did bum me out a bit.

The Camaro was a total surprise though.

Frankly, if you didn’t know about the Chevelle, that tells me there wasn’t that much and it was done well.  So it’s not all bad. ;)

Nice! There are a couple spots (right by the rear wheels) on my Chevelle that the magnet is weak, but there’s something behind there it’s pulling towards. Otherwise it was pretty solid, and the mess they made behind the front wheels I patched up with new steel. I’ll find out how badly someone gooped up the rear arches when I get around to it. Patch panels aren’t available for sedans so it may be... interesting.

It's nice to hear such a good looking survivor is solid to boot.  Awesome.   :-)

Well, survivor may not be the right term. It’s been painted (although I think the sheetmetal is mostly original), and the original engine and trans are long gone. But it’s definitely nice to know it wasn’t half assed.

They were done okay-ish. You can tell they’re backyard paint jobs. The Chevelle is cracking along the drip rail, for example, and there’s a bubble on the left rear quarter where there’s bondo.

Both would need a restoration to be show cars, but they’re just fine for decent drivers, which is what I’m more interested in anyway. What’s the point if you’re too scared to drive ‘em*

*I am terrified of the Chevelle with its’ manual steering and manual 4 wheel drums.

Agree that there’s no point if they’re too nice to drive.

Drum brakes don’t scare me (been a while but I’ve DD’d quite a few drum brake cars) , but the hell with unassisted brakes.

The manual brakes are what scare me. The Camaro has power drums and they aren’t too bad when they work. I’m only swapping to discs because the drums have always been finicky and I’d rather go to discs and be a bit safer rather than continue to fix and fight the drums.

I would take manual brakes over vacuum assisted power brakes when your engine doesn’t produce enough vacuum!

That was a hard lesson to learn on my first engine build and scared me daily!

Prior to engine swap on the Camaro and the rx7.  Also, prior to suspension upgrades to camaro.

Ps, yes that's also an mr2 hiding in the back.  I've had a good run with cars!

Mmmm early second gen. That’s Dad’s dream car. Also, I prefer the “fake” non RS split bumpers, even if there are tons of elitists that bitch that it isn’t correct.

The car has never seemed to have vacuum issues, neither of them seem to.

Me too!  And those urethane nose covers always crack and sun fade differently than the body.  Plus, the banana lights tuck in just right under the split bumper compared to the round lights!
